  • U.S. Attorney General seeks death penalty for boston bombing suspect

On Thursday, January 30 U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder announced that he will seek the death penalty for the 20-year-old Boston Marathon bombing suspect, Dzhokar Tsarnaev. Tsarnaev plead not guilty to the charges brought against him.

The Boston Marathon bombings on April 15, 2013 resulted in the death of 3 victims and the injury of over 260 others. A court date has not yet been set for Tsarnaev.

In 1984, Massachusetts abolished the death penalty, and attempts to reinstate it have been unsuccessful. However, since Tsarnaev’s trial will occur in federal court, his sentence will be carried out in federal prison if he is charged to the fullest extent. The last federal execution occurred in 2003.
